The Cardinals were ecstatic when Byron Murphy was available with the first pick of the second round in April, and he has already shown why.
The rookie corner half finished with the team's second-best defensive mark in Sunday's loss to the Ravens, according to Pro Football Focus. Murphy did not have a good defense for the race (although, to the naked eye, it seemed amazing considering his physical appearance), but was praised for his cover work.
Murphy scored 81.0 against the pass, completing only 1 in 5 targets for 11 yards. Murphy had a pass that almost resulted in an interception of Budda Baker, as well as breaking the late pass that was timed enough to prevent pass interference.
Other tibits of the week 2:
- Baker finished as the team's highest-ranked defenseman at 79.0, with his hedging skills that stand out. He just missed the choice and seems destined to get one from his new free security post.
- The tight game Maxx Williams only played 14 shots, but got a brilliant score of 87.5 during his limited time on the field. Pro Football Focus has earned him good grades for difficult grip and blocking passes.
- Quarterback Kyler Murray was awarded a score of 68.8, the fifth best performance in attack. His 8.7 ppg total was the sixth best of the quarter this week (pending Monday night's game), ahead of some of the league's biggest names in his second career start.
- Goalkeeper Justin Pugh almost did not play because of a stomach bug, but he emptied it and held on. Pugh finished with the highest score among the team's offensive linemen at 68.5, including a solid 78.5 pass protection.
