Additional information has been released following a recent accident that claimed the life of a local man in his 60s.

Criminal charges may be brought against the driver for his role in the death.

According to soldiers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, in the early hours of Sunday, September 19, they were informed, along with other first responders, of an accident with injuries in southern Muskingum County.

The accident report shows that at 1:45 a.m., Bret Ball, 27, of New Lexington, Ohio, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado southbound along State Route 145 near kilometer 2. The vehicle had also an attached trailer which was carrying a race car of unknown make and model.

As the Silverado headed south, it crossed the center line on the left side of the road, struck a ditch and rolled over, coming to rest on its roof.

Right front passenger Randy Ball, 61, of McConnelsville, Ohio, was thrown from the vehicle. He died of his injuries at the scene.

The driver, Bret Ball, and his rear passenger, Jeffery Ball, 29, of McConnelsville, Ohio, were slightly injured in the crash.

The driver, according to his statement, believes he may have fallen asleep while driving.

According to the soldiers, there was no adverse weather conditions that would have been a factor in the accident.

None of the three wore seat belts. Neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to have been the cause of the accident.

No citation has yet been released, but soldiers say the case will go to the Muskingum County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of the charges.

The Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office, Newton Township Fire Department, South Zanesville Fire Department and County Coroner assisted the Ohio Highway Patrol at the scene.
