NEW YORK (AP) – A police officer was injured in a daylight clash in upper Manhattan, which resulted in one death.

It arrived around 4:30 pm Thursday in Washington Heights, as officers reacted to a 9-1-1 call for shots. The 5 and a half year veteran should survive.

Police said the officer spotted a suspect with a handgun that hit a parking lot. When the officer goes on foot, police say the suspect takes cover behind a car and fires three shots.

The officer retaliates once before being hit in the armpit.

At the same time, police say that the agent's partner drove an unmarked patrol car into the parking lot and opened fire on the suspect, striking him deadly once in the chest.

The handgun was recovered.
