The Pittsburgh Steelers begin a difficult start to the season. After being beaten in a defeat by the New England Patriots in the first week, they saw Ben Roethlisberger leave the defeat on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, injured in the right elbow.
Gerry Dulac from Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Roethlisberger will receive an MRI for his elbow.
Roethlisberger did not return to the game after being deemed dubious at halftime. Second-year quarterback Mason Rudolph was comforted. He scored 12 of 19 yards for a total of 112 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the 28-26 loss to Pittsburgh.
In his post-game press match, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said that Roethlisberger's elbow would continue to be evaluated. Tomlin was also requested to discuss Rudolph's debut in the NFL.
"I like some of the things that he has shown," said Tomlin about Rudolph, via the team's official website. "His communication, his courage, but we have to find a way to win a football game, we have not been able to do it today."
Tomlin added that the Steelers did not have to change their offensive game plan after Rudolph entered the match. Rudolph, who also spoke to reporters after Sunday's game, said the extra representatives he was getting on Wednesday – the usual Big Ben day off – had helped him prepare for the opportunity.
"You have to be prepared for these situations every time your number is called," he said. "I thought I was ready, I really had a good idea of my age plan … I had a lot of reps this week and I did not feel at all prepare."
Roethlisberger only had 8 out of 15 for 75 yards in the first period. He appeared to hurt his elbow during a deep ball attempt on the right-hand line, and immediately grabbed him after the throw. He remained in the match until the end of the first half, but briefly visited the locker room.
Pittsburgh traded quarterback Josh Dobbs to the Jaguars for a sixth-round pick last week and could be on the market for a new reserve team if Roethlisberger was out of time and Rudolph started. The Steelers could also promote Devlin Hodges, an unprepared rookie who was added to the training squad after failing to be part of Pittsburgh's initial 53-man squad.
Expect Tomlin to take stock of Big Ben's status for the upcoming Pittsburgh game at his weekly press conference on Tuesday. Pittsburgh will travel to San Francisco next Sunday. The 49ers are 2-0 after their 41-17 win over the Bengals in Cincinnati on Sunday.
