A statement on Steelers.comThe Pittsburgh Steelers had a bad day Sunday afternoon, falling to 0-2 with a loss to the Seattle Seahawks at home. The injury to quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, which will end his season, was much more disturbing, announced the Steelers Monday morning.
"Ben Roethlisberger had an MRI on his right elbow Sunday night and the Steelers medical team decided that a surgery would be needed," said Mike Tomlin in a statement released by the team. "We are expecting surgery planned for this week, he will be placed on our reserve / injured list and will be away for the season."
Roethlisberger recently posted a statement on Steelers.com that discussed his future with the franchise:
I was informed that I needed an end-of-season elbow operation to keep playing football at the level I was expecting. It's shocking and heartbreaking for me to miss this season and feel that I'm giving up so many people. I can only trust God's plan, but I am fully committed to this challenge and come back stronger than ever next season. The Steelers have promised me three years this off season and I have every intention of honoring my contract and rewarding them with championship level matches. I will do everything in my power to support Mason and the team this season to contribute to the victory. I love this game, my teammates, the organization and the Steelers fans, and I feel in my heart that I still have a lot to give.
The veteran quarter signed an extension earlier this spring to keep him in office until 2021.
We discussed this in Pick Six's podcast with Jason La Canfora, a CBS Sports insider in the NFL, who said Ben and the Steelers were "contemplating" this operation. It looks like the surgery is similar to the pitchers with Tommy John, because Roethlisberger is thought to have suffered an injury to his UCL. Rehabilitation was a possibility, but it was probably a difficult battle.

Roethlisberger suffered an elbow injury in the first half against the Seahawks, and it immediately became clear that something was wrong at all. He grabbed his elbow and looked at the sideline.
The Steelers took him out and sent him to the locker room. He would return to the sideline before half-time, but he never played again. That was the stonemason Rudolph showing the rest of the way.
