After four sometimes difficult and often acclaimed seasons on HBO, Insecure will come to a conclusion with the upcoming fifth season.
“Prentice and I are so grateful that HBO believed in our show from the start and kept trusting us to see our vision until the end,” co-creator and star Issa Rae told Deadline today at About the Emmy-nominated comedy she produces with Prentice. Penny.
“We had always planned to tell this story across five seasons, but we couldn’t have gone this far without the tremendous support of our audience,” the bestseller The Misadventures of the Clumsy Black Girl author and member of the executive committee of the recently established Television Academy.
“I feel very happy to be ending our characters’ stories, at least on screen.”

With all of his scripts completed, the fifth and final season of Unsafe is expected to go into production later this month. Starring its main cast of Rae, Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, Natasha Rothwell and Amanda Seales, the series will return later this year, according to HBO.
Based on Rae’s online series Awkward black girl, Larry Wilmore co-created Unsafe focused on the trials, tribulations and twists and turns of Los Angeles-based Issa as she negotiated love, life, and friendship (especially with Orji portraying Molly). The Golden Globe and NAACP Image Award nominated series debuted on HBO in October 2016 and concluded its fourth season with a finale directed and written by Penny last June.
Unsafe has been renewed for what is now its final season in May 2020 by HBO, owned by AT&T.
“Issa has turned insecurity into an iconic form of comedy,” premium channel vice president of programming Amy Gravitt said in a statement on Wednesday.
“The show is as incisive as it is sincere, and it resonated strongly with its audiences because of the deeply personal work that Issa, Prentice, Melina, the cast and the writers put into it,” continued the executive. “This talented team designed a brilliant final season for Unsafe and we look forward to having many more stories to tell with this unique group of collaborators.
From this group, Unsafe is an EP by Rae, Penny, Melina Matsoukas, Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky, Jonathan Berry, Amy Aniobi and Jim Kleverweis.
Although Rae thrills him as a producer and creator in new arenas, the daring and vulnerability of Unsafe will miss. To paraphrase Rae’s character from the Season 4 finale, that was a lot – in the best way.
