Kanye West is coming home.
The controversial rapper is still working on his highly anticipated new album, “Donda,” inspired by his late mother and, perhaps, his childhood home in Chicago.
Over the weekend, the 44-year-old hip-hop pioneer sent fans an enigmatic riddle of the house as the long-delayed release of “Donda” looms, hinting at what fans may be up to. wait regarding his next music.
Grammy winner deleted all from his past Instagram photos centered on the new album to only sharing one photo with his 7.4 million followers – of the house he grew up in.
The post now has over 1.5 million likes and nearly 40,000 diehard fan comments – and The Post has found interior footage of the property in the South Shore neighborhood.
The 1,600-square-foot home has changed hands several times since it was last owned by West’s mother over 18 years ago, when she sold it for $ 121,000 in 2003, according to property records.
West lived in the house for about eight of her childhood years, according to her mother’s 2007 memoir, “Raising Kanye: Life Lessons from the Mother of a Hip-Hop Superstar.”
“I didn’t know it, but South Shore, and especially South Shore Drive, where we lived, was considered ‘the sh …’, a prestigious neighborhood in a coveted part of town,” she wrote at the time. “We were within walking distance of Lake Michigan and our backyard leaned against Rainbow Park. In 2011, a film crew even followed West as he toured the house with Jay-Z. Originally built in 1905, the house sits on 7,000 square feet of land and consists of three bedrooms and one bathroom.
Donda sold the house after her son had an argument with boys at Rainbow Beach Park, who demanded his bike and then punctured his tires when he refused to give it up.
“Call it black flight or something, I was good to go,” Donda wrote. “What if the next step is to recruit him into a gang or something?” I did not have it. It didn’t take long to find the house on Blue Island.
The house was sold less than a year before Kanye released his first studio album, “The College Dropout”.
Her mother died five years later after undergoing cosmetic surgery.
In 2013, West started Donda’s House with co-founder Rhymefest, a non-profit arts organization for young people. Donda’s House would then buy the South Shore house in 2016 to make it a community art incubator. But the organization said that in 2017 the house had to be demolished because it was suffering from “significant structural damage”. The house had already been the subject of foreclosure in previous years.
After some controversy with the organization, Kanye officially bought the home for $ 225,000 with the intention of renovating it in 2019 as part of his LLC, Donda Services.
Shortly thereafter, the city learned of the South Shore home and filed a complaint with the Demolition Court in January 2019. The July 2018 report revealed roof damage, missing siding and problems. with the stairs, among other alleged problems.
But luckily, the city approved a permit in October 2019 to replace the roof; a permit in November 2019 to repair the electrical wiring and a renovation permit in April 2020, almost two months after the issuance of the stop work order.
As the house continues with renovations, Kanye still seems to be working on the album.
Earlier this month, the star broadcast another night of listening to “Donda” live from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, but the album has yet to be released on the streaming services.
On his first night of listening last month, Kanye got emotional as he performed one of his songs from the album – “Love Unconditionally” – crying as he rapped about “losing my family”.
But fans aren’t holding their breath, including Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue model Tinashe, whose awaited new album, “333”, was actually released on time.
“I’ve been a fan of Kanye in the past,” she previously told The Post, “but I’m certainly not a fan of some of the decisions he’s made throughout his career. I can’t wait to see what he brings sonically with the new album because if there’s one thing Kanye does, it’s art.
“So I’m interested in receiving his art whenever he’s ready to give it to us,” she said.
