As Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit against The Walt Disney Company has turned into a bitter public fight, some insiders say Disney CEO Bob Chapek is fully responsible for the current situation, according to The Envelopeis Sharon Waxman.
Johansson is currently suing Disney over her simultaneous release of Black Widow in theaters and on Disney + via Premier Access, which she says lost her financial incentives tied to the film’s box office revenue, as stated in her contract. While the COVID-19 pandemic played a role in Disney’s decision, Johansson says Disney refused to renegotiate their deal after the hybrid exit decision. Disney responded to the lawsuit, calling it “particularly sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The report, later reiterated by Chris Agar of ScreenRant, claims that “several insiders” blame Chapek’s inexperience with talent management for letting things lead to this lawsuit, with one saying “he doesn’t. didn’t think it would explode in his face. ”
Gene Del Vecchio, assistant professor at USC Marshall School of Business, described the difference between Chapek and his predecessor, Disney executive chairman Bob Iger, in how they approach talent:
