A long-time crusader and former congressman on climate change, he ended his candidacy for the White House Wednesday night, noting that it had "become clear" that he had no chance to win the primary.
While he had reached the fundraising threshold required to participate in the next round of Democratic presidential debates in September, he was far from meeting the voting criteria – and it was clear he would not qualify for the debate. before the deadline next week.

Inslee, 68, became the third Democrat to end his presidential candidacy this summer. Former Colorado governor John Hickenlooper resigned last week and California representative Eric Swalwell ended his candidacy last month.
Even with the departures of Inslee, Hickenlooper and Swalwell, about twenty Democrats are vying for the nomination to the presidency of their party.
In announcing his reelection, Inslee highlighted his failed presidential campaign: "It has been a great honor to represent our state on the national stage in the race for the presidency. Three Democrats – Attorney General Bob Ferguson, Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz, and King County Executive Dow Constantine – said they would be interested in running for governor if Inslee did not show up.
Ferguson quickly approved Inslee Thursday.
Three Republicans have already jumped into the primary of the governor of their party. No GOP candidate has won the election of the governor of the Blue State in more than three decades.
Governors of the state of Washington are not subject to term limits, although most have not served more than two terms. Republican Governor Dan Evans, who served from 1965 to 1977, was the last governor to serve in Washington.
