UPDATED: Pedro Almodovar responded to Instagram’s deletion and subsequent reinstatement of the ‘Parallel Mothers’ poster.
Communicating via Twitter from his brother and producer Agustín Almodóvar, the filmmaker wrote: the need to be sane at the sight of a female nipple, and to those of you who have spoken about it in the media. You have the mind behind the algorithm that decides what is obscene and offensive to go back and allow the poster to flow freely. It is your victory, a great victory. You have to be vigilant before the machines decide what we can do and what we cannot do. I have always relied on the kindness of strangers, but as long as they are human. An algorithm is not human. No matter how much information the algorithm has, it will never have a heart or common sense. Thank you all, once again. I hope the film will live up to your expectations.
Instagram has apologized to Spanish author Pedro Almodóvar for removing a poster of its upcoming Venice opener “Parallel Mothers” (Madres paralelas).
The poster in question depicting a lactating nipple, published on Monday, has been removed for violating Instagram’s nudity guidelines.
“However, we make exceptions to allow nudity in certain circumstances, including where there is a clear artistic context. So we’ve restored the posts sharing the movie Almodóvar on Instagram, and we’re very sorry for any confusion caused, ”the company said in an emailed statement to The Associated Press.
The restoration of the images on Instagram came after poster designer Javier Jaén announced that the poster had been removed from his Instagram page on Tuesday. “As expected, @instagram has removed the poster we made for Almodóvar’s latest film #madresparalelas” Jaén. He reposted the image after which it was allowed to stay.
Variety contacted Almodóvar’s production company for comment.
The Instagram community guidelines state, “We know there are times when people may want to share nude images of an artistic or creative nature, but for various reasons we don’t allow nudity on Instagram. . This includes photos, videos, and some digitally created content that show sex, genitals, and close-ups of fully naked buttocks. It also includes photos of female nipples, but photos in the context of breastfeeding, childbirth and times after birth, health-related situations (e.g. post-mastectomy, breast cancer awareness or gender confirmation surgery) or an act of protest are permitted. Nudity in photos of paintings and sculptures is also acceptable.
There is a #FreetheNipple movement and a long-standing Instagram hashtag that artists and celebrities have made to try and get Instagram to relax its guidelines. These include Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, and Chrissy Teigen, who posted pictures of nipples which Instagram later deleted.
“Parallel Mothers”, with Penélope Cruz, Rossy de Palma and Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, opens the Venice Film Festival on September 1st.
