Instagram Reels is already mimicking TikTok in a number of ways, and now it’s getting another feature from the popular video app: Duos. On Instagram, users can now “Remix” a reel, which means they can upload a video alongside another user, building on the original clip. The feature is already popular on TikTok, often for dance challenges, under the “duet” feature.
To remix a reel, tap the three dot menu on a reel and select “Remix this reel”. From there, you can record your reel or download prerecorded footage. You can also control the volume of original audio or recorded audio, and add voiceover, as well as other editing functions. Only newer reels will have the remixes turned on automatically, but if you already have a reel that you want people to be able to remix, you can manually turn it on by tapping that three-dot menu on your own video and selecting “Turn On.” remix ”. If you want to turn off remixing on all of your reels, you can do that through your wider profile settings.
The reels launched in August of last year, and initially Instagram seemed open to people reusing their TikToks on the platform. But over the months, Instagram has added more TikTok-like features while de-emphasizing any recycled content. The company is clearly committed to making short video content a mainstay. It added a Reels button to its home screen and even made sure the videos were cut for its Lite global app. It’s getting closer and closer to looking exactly like TikTok.
