Instagram plans to prevent users from sharing feed photos with stories

Instagram is now considering a major change in how the Instagram Stories feature works. In a new test, the company removed the option to share feed posts to stories for certain users.

As reported by Social media today (via The edge), Instagram users have received notifications about the upcoming change that turns off the option to re-share a photo or video from the regular feed to stories.

The company claims some people don’t like seeing the same content from the shared feed in the stories because each feature was created for a different purpose. A banner appears at the top of the app with the following message for users who have been chosen to participate in this test:

Our community tells us that they want to see fewer posts in Stories. During this test, you will not be able to add a feed post to your story.

Instagram told the report that the tests were being carried out “in a few selected regions”, while saying that “there are no plans to roll out this change more widely at this point”. It’s unclear how the social network determines which users from which regions will lose access to the re-sharing option.

On a related note, Instagram has started advising content creators not to repost TikTok videos on Reels – which is the Instagram platform that competes directly with TikTok. While Instagram doesn’t ban TikTok videos, the company demands that the new Reels be “original and authentic.”
