Instagram Redesigns Home Screen For First Time In Years, Adding Reels And Shop Tabs

Instagram is making major design changes to its home screen for the first time in years. Today, the company announced that it is adding Reels and Shop tabs to its home screen, a communication of business priorities. The Reels tab will of course lead users to Reels, short form videos similar to TikTok. The Shop tab will display personalized recommendations, publisher’s choices organized by the @shop channel, purchasable videos, and new product collections. The two tabs make it easier for users to find what they want on the platform and access it immediately.

The Like tab as well as the Create tab where people upload photos move to the upper right corner next to the direct message inbox.

“We don’t take these changes lightly – we haven’t updated the Instagram home screen in a significant way in some time,” Instagram manager Adam Mosseri wrote in a post by blog. “But the way people create and appreciate culture has changed, and the biggest risk for Instagram is not that we change too quickly, but that we don’t change and become useless. We are excited about the new design and believe it gives the app a much needed update, while remaining true to our core value of simplicity. “

The fact that Instagram is committing to a Reels tab just months after launching in the US and abroad suggests that the format is here to stay. Interestingly, IGTV, Instagram’s site for long-form videos, still hasn’t received a dedicated home screen tab and is only available through the Discover page, which could be a testament to the lack of interest in the format.

The addition of shopping is less surprising than Reels. Instagram has developed its shopping product over the years, and this summer it launched a dedicated shopping page and the ability to use Facebook Pay for transactions. By placing both Reels and Shop on the home screen, we can expect the company to continue investing in these two areas.
