The social media platform on Tuesday launched a new tool called “Sensitive Content Control,” which gives users the ability to increase or decrease the amount of potentially objectionable content that appears in Explore, the section where the app displays posts from accounts that users don’t follow.
Previously, Instagram relied on a set of recommendation guidelines to ensure that users didn’t see potentially disturbing or offensive content in Explore. With the new tool, users can choose to keep the default setting of seeing a limited amount of sensitive content, or to further reduce the amount of that content shown to them. People over 18 will also be able to authorize all messages deemed sensitive by nature.
While Instagram’s content moderation policy prohibits certain types of problematic content, including hate speech and harassment, this news “sensitive content” option concerns posts that some users might take offense to, such as those of a sexual or violent nature, but which do not necessarily violate the content rules of the application.
“We recognize that everyone has different preferences for what they want to see in Explore, and that control will give people more choice over what they see,” Instagram’s parent company said. Facebook (FB) said in a statement.
The change comes as Instagram and other social networks attempt to address concerns about content moderation and user well-being. Instagram recently rolled out the ability to hide likes and the ability for users to block certain followers from interacting with their accounts. And Facebook is currently fighting criticism for failing to prevent the spread of certain other types of problematic content, namely disinformation about the Covid-19 pandemic and vaccines.
Users can access the new feature in the Settings menu of their Instagram profile by going to “Account” and then “Sensitive Content Control”.
