In a relatively low scoring affair, the Chargers couldn’t get the upper hand over the 49ers, losing by a score of 15-10.
To recap Sunday’s preseason game, here’s everything we know:
It was over when….
49ers quarterback Trey Lance found wide receiver Travis Benjamin in the end zone with six minutes left in the third quarter. The Chargers had five chances after the score to regain the lead but couldn’t.
Game keys
Both teams have accumulated 25 penalties.
The Chargers forced three turnovers, but only managed to capitalize on one.
Offense was only 2 of 11 in third down situations.
The offensive unit combined only 171 total yards of attack.
3 game stars
QB Easton stick: 10 of 14, 85 passing yards, one touchdown, three carries for 15 yards
EDGE Kyler Fackrell: Two tackles, one sack, one tackle for loss, three quarterback hits
LB Nick Niemann: 8 tackles in total, one tackle for the loss
Quick hitters
With his performance, Stick made the battle to save Justin Herbert much more interesting. Chase Daniel, on the other hand, did not help his cause, amassing just 60 yards passing in 21 attempts, plus an interception.
Stick and Daniel have been sacked five times and come under pressure on several occasions, particularly testament to the lack of depth of the offensive line, including Trey Pipkins or Storm Norton, who have not proven to be reliable swing tackles. .
Neither Joshua Kelley nor Larry Rountree III went their separate ways in the backfield battle, as the two only combined for 21 yards on 15 carries. However, they both made good plays in the passing game.
Jalen Guyton led all wide receivers with 35 snaps. Doing what he does best, Guyton beat a defenseman vertically for 39 yards on his lone target.
Josh Palmer, who made 22 snaps, received only one target, resulting in a three-yard touchdown.
Tyron Johnson was on the pitch much longer than I expected. Johnson caught just four passes for 11 yards.
The inside of the defensive line was strong in the passing department, but it wasn’t as effective in the running game as the Niners averaged four yards per carry.
Luckily for the guys in the trenches, the second line of defense was almost always there to clean things up, including Niemann and Cole Christiansen, who combined for 15 tackles.
There wasn’t much to take away from the kicking battle, as there was only one set-up attempt, which was executed by Michael Badgley from 50 yards away.
Speaking of special teams, the coverage was not very good. San Francisco averaged 20 yards on kick returns and 18 yards on punt returns.
And after?
The Chargers will close the road preseason roster against the Seahawks on Saturday, August 28 at 7 p.m. PT.
