Instant observations from day 11

WINNER:

Safety Adrian Phillips is an absolute animal. The guy is embarrassing the tight ends that New England has spent so much money to acquire. With Hunter Henry injured, Phillips spent even more time on Jonnu Smith, and safety recorded an interception in the red zone and a broken fourth pass in the end zone. Smith doesn’t like working against Phillips.

“Extremely competitive, man,” Smith said last weekend. “He’s a hell of a player. We just keep fighting, keep improving.

Henry certainly doesn’t like seeing Phillips cross the line before the snap. During their days as teammates with the Chargers, Henry used to chase Phillips, hoping he would change assignments.

“He’s a great football player,” Henry said earlier at training camp. “Super smart. Funny.”

LOSING:

Justin Bethel continued to work as a cornerback, and I’m not sure that’s okay with him. New England love to give its special team stars a chance to contribute to their respective positions. But with Bethel, you feel a bit forced. He’s too often in tow for an offensive highlight reel game. For example, Jonnu Smith hit a 50-yard touchdown after Bethel and Cody Davis, another standout special team, broke their cover.
