Intel agrees to acquire barefoot start-up networks

Intel Corp. Acquires Start-Up Barefoot Networks Inc. to Develop Small-Business Network Chip Technology and Compete with Broadcom Inc.

Although Intel is the largest computer chip manufacturer in the United States, it does not currently manufacture chips for managing communications over Ethernet, a technology widely used to connect a large network of computers and servers. This arena is dominated by Broadcom, based in San Jose.
