Intel Core i7-12700K Alder Lake-S desktop processor spotted

An entry for Intel’s Alder Lake-S-based Core i7-12700K processor has likely been discovered in the SiSoftware Sandra database. The spotted processor was running on a desktop platform and will be part of the Alder Lake-S segment scheduled to launch later this year.

Spotted Intel Core i7-12700K Alder Lake-S Desktop Processor – 12 Cores, 20 Threads, 25MB L3 Cache

The processor doesn’t have a name, but given its specs, we’re most definitely looking at Intel’s Core i7-12700K (12700) SKU based on older leaks. The sample includes 12 cores of which 8 are based on the Golden Cove and 4 are expected to be based on the Goldmont architecture. This should give us a total of 24 threads (16 performance core threads and 8 efficiency core threads). As for clock speeds, since this is an engineering sample, we are considering a base frequency of 1.20 GHz and a boost frequency of 3.40 GHz, but we expect that they are much higher in the retail and final qualification variants.

Intel’s upcoming Alder Lake processors consume more power than Rocket Lake and Comet Lake chips

Regarding the cache, first of all, the existing software suites are not fully updated to fully recognize Alder Lake-S hybrid processors, as such the actual number of cores and threads may be inaccurate. . This is the case here because the chip is actually identified as a 12-core, 24-thread processor when in reality it should be 12-core and 20-thread. The number of caches is displayed correctly for 9 cores, which means that the software reads the 8 performance cores correctly, but the efficiency core cluster consisting of 4 cores is recognized as 1 whole core. More details on configuring the cache of Alder Lake-S processors can be found here.

The cache is also displayed for the 9 cores at 1.25MB per core when this is not the case. Performance cores carry 1.25MB of cache and efficiency cores would carry 2MB of cache per 4-core cluster. The number of L3 caches matches previous rumors which placed the Core i7-12700K at 25MB of cache. It looks like the cache will be reduced on some Alder Lake-S configurations with this particular chip with a 2.75MB L3 cache (3MB full) on performance and 3MB cache per base cluster of efficiency.

This is what the base configuration of all Alder Lake processors would look like:

  • Intel Core i9 K-Series (8 Golden + 8 Grace) = 16 cores / 24 threads
  • Intel Core i7 K-Series (8 Golden + 4 Grace) = 12 cores / 20 threads
  • Intel Core i5 K-Series (6 Golden + 4 Grace) = 10 cores / 16 threads
  • Intel Core i9 A-Series (8 Golden + 8 Grace) = 16 cores / 24 threads
  • Intel Core i7 A-Series (8 Golden + 4 Grace) = 12 cores / 20 threads
  • Intel Core i5 A-Series (6 Golden + 0 Grace) = 6 cores / 12 threads
  • Intel Core i3 A-Series (4 Golden + 0 Grace) = 4 cores / 8 threads

The Alder Lake-S Core i7-12700K processor has been tested on a desktop platform that includes 16 GB DDR5-4800 (PC76800) Memory. Judging by the test setup, this is definitely a pre-test board and not a proper Z690 motherboard that is expected to launch in Q4 2021.
