Why is this important: Changes are coming at Intel, and I’m not just referring to new management. According to the latest research from a leading business intelligence company, Intel will begin outsourcing the production of some of its processors to TSMC later this year.
According to business intelligence firm TrendForce, Intel plans to outsource production of its Core i3 processors to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in the second half of 2021 using its 5nm node. Chipzilla’s mid-range and high-end processors, meanwhile, are expected to go into mass production on TSMC’s 3nm node in the second half of 2022.
TrendForce’s latest survey ties in with what we heard last week about Intel discussing with TSMC the outsourcing of some of its chip production.
According to Bloomberg’s report last Friday, not all chips Intel supplied to TSMC would be ready for the market until 2023 at the earliest.
In July, Intel CEO Bob Swan said Intel would consider outsourcing some of the manufacturing of its processors. In the last audit, Swan was expected to reveal Intel’s intentions in its next earnings report on January 21. Earlier today, however, the company announced that Swan would step down in mid-February. the date of January 21 is still valid.
