Intel does not support 11th Generation Rocket Lake desktop processors on B460 and H410 chipset motherboards

Intel has confirmed that it will not allow compatibility for 11th Gen Rocket Lake processors on existing motherboards based on the B460 and H410 chipsets. According to Intel, processors will be officially supported on the Z490 and H470 motherboards, while more budget-oriented offerings will be left out.

On its official support page, Intel states that motherboards based on Intel B460 and H410 chipsets are not compatible with 11th generation Intel processors. Now 11th Gen Intel processors come with Rocket Lake and Comet Lake Refresh flavors. The entry-level 400 series motherboards will retail support for the 11th Gen Comet Lake Refresh processors, which will include Celeron, Pentium and Core i3 components, but will not receive support for the Rocket Lake line which includes Core i5, Core i7, and Core i9 SKUs.

This could be due to many reasons such as inadequate power supply on entry level boards. Only the Z490 and H470 offerings are apparently good enough to support Rocket Lake chips. However, that doesn’t mean we won’t see some sort of unofficial Rocket Lake processor support from card vendors. It is possible that unofficial BIOS support will be offered which would allow Rocket Lake processor support, but with no guarantees that everything will work fine and stably.

The other reason could be that Intel is trying to push its 500 series platform which was introduced at CES 2021 and several motherboards are now available in the outlets. The Intel B560 chipset also has a few key advantages over its predecessor, offering memory overclocking and more PCIe (Gen 4) I / O. The H510 series cards will offer WiFi6 support along with minor firmware updates, but we can expect Rocket Lake processors to perform stably even with these entry-level designs.
