(Reuters) – Intel Corp. executives announced on Friday that their modem chips will not show up in mobile phones until 2020, pointing out the possibility that their main customer, Apple Inc., will be more expensive. a year late on providing a device using faster networks.
Sandra Rivera, who oversees Intel's network chip business, said at a media event in Palo Alto, California, that 5G modem chip samples would be delivered to customers this year, but that Intel does not does not foresee "consumer products on the market" until 2020.
Intel announced that its 5G modem chip would be available later this year, but never indicated when it thought the products would arrive for consumers. Rivera said non-consumer 5G products, such as network equipment, will be released later this year.
It's unclear whether Intel's synchronization on modem chips means that Apple will not have an iPhone with 5G capabilities by 2019. Bloomberg previously said Apple would not have a ready iPhone 5G before 2020.
Apple executives have discussed with Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and MediaTek Inc. of 5G modem chips for iPhones to be commercialized this year, but the outcome of these discussions is not known.
On February 7, Reuters announced that Apple had transferred its modem engineering efforts into the same division as that of its proprietary processor chips.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
