If it wasn’t already clear that Intel is concerned about Apple’s M1 chip, now is. PC World and Tom’s material report that Intel has shared a legion of benchmarks claiming to show that 11th generation Core i7 laptop processors are faster than the M1. They suggest that there are areas where Intel can claim victory, although there are also questions about Intel’s methods.
The results put Intel ahead of Apple in a test of Chrome browsing, Office 365 tasks, Adobe creative apps and AI. While gaming was kind of a washout, Intel pointed out that some games just aren’t available on Macs. The chip giant also argued that Apple’s battery life claims were only fluffy – they weren’t better than a Core i7 in practice, Intel said.
Intel was also keen to highlight better support for external monitors and a greater variety of hardware in its camp, such as touchscreen laptops.
However, the methodology raises concerns. On the one hand, Intel switched hardware between testing, both for its own processors and those of Apple. He used a MacBook Air for the battery life test rather than the more durable Pro, for example. Intel also chose some tests that favored its components particularly well, like an AI Topaz Labs test – one of the few that uses Intel’s hardware acceleration. It’s safe to say that these numbers don’t fully match some reviews, including ours.
Companies routinely choose references that put their products in the best light, of course, and it’s true that compatibility and variety is skewed in favor of Intel. However, the very fact that Intel offers these benchmarks speaks volumes. Intel sees Apple’s chips as a threat enough to feel compelled to launch a media offensive, and it’s unlikely to be suspicious of its new rival in the future.
