A U.S. intelligence report due for release Thursday will blame the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, according to Reuters.

The CIA-led report will explain how the crown prince approved and possibly ordered Khashoggi’s murder, four people familiar with its contents told the press service.

Khashoggi, an American reporter for the Washington Post who often criticized the crown prince in his writings, was killed in 2018 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Officials believe Saudi operatives likely dismembered Khashoggi’s remains, which have never been found.

He told reporters on Wednesday that he read the intelligence report but did not speak directly to the crown prince, speaking only to his father, Saudi King Salman.

“We have been in contact with Saudi officials at many levels during the first weeks of this administration,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement to Reuters.

The press service noted that a 2018 United Nations human rights investigation revealed that Saudi Arabia was responsible for a “deliberate and premeditated execution” of Khashoggi.

“There is sufficient credible evidence regarding the responsibility of the crown prince requiring further investigation,” investigator Agnes Callamard said at the time.

The crown prince has denied any involvement in Khashoggi’s death.
