Former President Trump spoke to “Fox & Friends” corporate reporter Lawrence Jones at CPAC in Dallas, saying that in order to fight crime, “you have to give the police back their authority.”
In a broad interview which is now available on Fox Nation, Trump pointed out that violent crime is currently skyrocketing in “Democratic states,” including Illinois and New York, particularly in cities like Chicago and New York.
Trump noted that Chicago is “very bad” and pointed out that the city had experienced a deadly July 4 weekend, which the Chicago Sun Times said was “the deadliest and most violent weekend” of the city so far this year with over 100 people shot and at least 19 killed.

So far in Chicago in 2021, at least 1,587 people have been shot, an 11% increase from 2020 and a 58% increase from 2019, according to Chicago Police Department crime statistics for the week ending July 4th.
Trump also noted that crime in New York is “through the roof” because there is “no more cash bond” and “all they do is go after Republicans.”
Under old New York law, prosecutors determined whether to make a recommendation for bail or accept the accused to be released on their own recognizance. The judge in charge of the case would then make a decision. Defense lawyers usually make arguments that the bond would be inappropriate or should be set low, which the judges would consider.

Under current law, courts are now prohibited from setting monetary bail or holding defendants in pretrial detention in almost all types of misdemeanors, and for a long list of crimes as well.
In New York City, there has been an 8.5% increase in murders since the start of the year through July 4 and a 37.8% increase in shooting incidents, according to data provided by the NYPD.
“New York is totally out of control,” Trump told host Fox Nation.
The police debate has been at the top of American consciousness since a white man, now former Minneapolis cop, Derek Chauvin, knelt around George Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes in May 2020; Floyd later died.
Chauvin has since been convicted of murder, but Floyd’s death sparked nationwide protests and sparked the “defund the police” movement. Congress is currently considering sweeping police reform legislation to make officers more accountable for misconduct.
Trump argued that the police can stop the rise in crime, but “the police are afraid of losing everything if they go after someone because bad acts have been done and because of those bad acts, they destroyed these police forces “.
According to a Fox News poll conducted in April during the final days of Chauvin’s trial, it was found that by a margin of almost 2 to 1 (62 to 33%), registered voters disagree with the reduction in police funding and its transfer to other regions.
