In full swing, Apple introduced in 2015 3D Touch to the world and positioned it as one of the flagship features of the iPhone 6. For years, 3D Touch was supposed to change the way we were using our smartphones by completely adding a totally new and intuitive method of interaction with the user interface.
Nearly four years after its introduction, however, it is fair to say that 3D Touch has never really managed to respect the hype that accompanied its unveiling. While the feature – which offered users a variety of contextual options based on the pressure on the display – was technologically impressive, it was not easily detectable or even available on all iOS devices. In light of this, we now see reports that Apple with iOS 13 would have effectively removed this feature in favor of an alternative to the long press.
Rumors of the demise of 3D Touch began to germinate in the weeks and months ahead of WWDC. And now that the first iOS 13 beta is in the hands of the developers, 9to5Mac confirms that iOS users with 3D Touch enabled devices will no longer be able to take advantage of 3D Touch once the iOS 13 becomes available.
The good news is that the features provided by 3D Touch, such as Peek and Pop or the quick actions of the home screen, are now available with long press movements. The bad news is that owners of 3D Touch phones, that is to say all iPhones since the iPhone 6, with the exception of the SE and the XR, are losing the features that existed in previous versions of the operating system.
Apple has standardized a new long press for contextual actions on iOS 13. This gesture is available on all seventh generation iPhones, iPads and iPod touch.
It's a bit discouraging to see a feature full of utility and untapped potential to be put to death. And although a long press offers the same benefits, it is not disputed that it represents a "definitive regression of the fluidity and functionality of the 3D Touch iPhones".
That said, and given that 3D Touch has not been as widely used as expected, the sad reality is that most IOS users do not even know what they are missing.
