Warning, Siri users: you can finally ditch Apple Music and make Spotify, or another third-party music service, your default service.
First discovered by Reddit users (via MacRumors), the new feature is part of developer and public beta versions for iOS 14.5. So this is not available for everyone just now.
If one of the beta versions is downloaded to your iPhone, you will be able to change your default music service the first time you ask Siri to play a song.
After downloading the public beta of iOS 14.5, I immediately tested the functionality. Rather than say “Hey Siri, play Mumford & Sons on Spotify,” I said “Hey Siri, play Mumford & Sons.”
From there, Siri listed three streaming services currently on my phone: Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify. Toward the bottom of the screen he asked, “Which app do you want to use?”
Once I selected Spotify, it asked for permission to access my Spotify data. After pressing “Yes”, he started playing a song through the app. Now Siri automatically plays music on Spotify without me having to specify.
But the installation process has been a bit buggy for some – which comes with the download territory of any beta software. For example, Reddit user mvbalan said:
“Wow, great find OP! It seems to be half done, because when I try to play a particular artist, song, playlist or album, it defaults to what I chose from the menu selection, but when I say like “play music” It is Apple Music by default “
The creator of the feed, matejamm1, also found that the feature did not work very well:
“Yeah, it’s a little inconsistent, like everything Siri has to say. Earlier, I asked him to ‘Play at the blue hotel’, after which he offered to choose, then I rejected it and asked again and it played straight to Apple Music, then the third time I put it down it asked me to access my Pocket Casts data which is a podcast app and that obviously has no music at all.
The second screenshot was another occasion 30 minutes later. I only posted it to demonstrate that Deezer has temporarily become the default music service for Siri. This could indicate that changing the default value will soon be available for all services. “
From the screenshots above, you can see that the feature was buggy for me as well, as it listed optional Apple podcasts (which is, obviously, a podcast app).
I noticed, however, that when I asked “ArmChair Expert with Dax Shepard”, he started playing the last episode on the Apple Podcasts app (although he is also available on Spotify). So, given that it’s still in beta, it’s possible that it’s having a hard time identifying the difference between songs and podcasts right now.
Obviously, Apple still has some work to do before the feature is officially released in the final version of iOS 14.5. Either way, at least you can expect to waste some time on those Siri commands whenever you want to listen to music.
