A serious bug in the iOS 15 Messages app may cause some saved photos to be deleted, according to several complaints we’ve heard. MacRumors Twitter readers and users.

IOS 15 Photos Feature
If you save a photo from a thread and then delete that thread, the next time an iCloud backup is taken, the photo will disappear.

Even though the image is saved to your personal iCloud Photo Library, it still appears to be linked to the Messages app in iOS 15‌, and its saving does not persist thanks to thread deletion and ‌iCloud‌ backup.

To reproduce this bug, the following steps should be taken:

  1. Save a photo of a Messages conversation to your Camera Roll.
  2. Check that the photo has been saved.
  3. Delete the Messages conversation where the photo originated from. The photo will still be in your iCloud Photo Library at this point.
  4. Make an ‌iCloud‌ backup and the photo will disappear.

This is a problem because most of the users keep the ‌iCloud‌ backup feature turned on and it is something that happens automatically. If you regularly delete discussion threads, if there is a photo you want to keep, you will not be able to keep it with ‌iCloud‌ backup enabled. We tested this bug on an iPhone running iOS 15.1 Beta 2 and our photo was deleted after deleting the Messages thread and making an ‌iCloud‌ backup. So the issue has not yet been resolved in the current beta.

Until this bug is fixed, if you have uploaded photos from the Messages app, you should make sure to keep those Messages conversations and not delete them to prevent them from being automatically deleted from your devices.

(Thank you, Chad!)
