New renderings for the rumored 2021 iPad Pro have hinted at the potential for the design direction Apple’s next tablet could take.
Pigtou, with help from David from @xleaks, posted the following images and videos, which are said to be based on leaked CAD files of the smaller 11-inch version of Apple’s upcoming premium tablet. The iPad Pro concept looks a lot like the iPad Pro with minor changes, but those could have big consequences.
The main change from the previous generation is that there are more holes in the parts of the chassis from which the four-speaker system kicks in. The current iPad Pro has 17 holes drilled on either side of the bottom USB-C port, but this render shows 15 on one side and 20 on the other. It’s a small design change, but one that could indicate bigger changes to the components and their placement in the iPad.
We also know from previous leaks that the larger 12.9-inch model may have smaller bezels around the screen. Pigtou does not mention it here for the 11-inch version.
The shape of the tablet remains the same as the previous generation. Even the dimensions are the same, at 247.6mm high, 178.5mm wide and 5.9mm thick; or 7.7mm thick if you also include the height of the square camera bump. This is good news because it means that it will still fit all the accessories of the current iPad Pro, such as the Magic Keyboard or the Apple Pencil 2.
Other return items include the USB-C port, rear smart connector for powering accessories, and dual rear cameras with LiDAR sensor.
Expect Face ID to return as well, though it’s possible Apple could also add the new Power Button-mounted Touch ID sensor it gave the new iPad Air as an alternate unlock method.
We don’t yet know which chip the new iPad Pro will get. Since iPad Pros typically use more powerful versions of Apple’s latest mobile chipsets, it’s likely we’ll see a modified A14 chip, the silicon found in the iPad Air and iPhone 12 series. , this could mean that the iPad Pro will be compatible with 5G, a first for the iPad family.
Pigtou speculates, however, that it could be the same M1 chip found in the latest MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini. It would certainly offer a lot of power if Apple were to focus on the iPad Pro as a serious replacement for a laptop. Additionally, we know that iOS apps run on M1 chips due to the architecture shared with Apple’s A series chips.
The new iPad Pro will be released in May / June 2021, according to Pigtou, which would be around the time of Apple’s WWDC conference.
This is later than the March release of last year’s iPad Pro 2020, but that version was released without a launch event. Maybe Apple wants to give the new tablets a piece of the limelight at the WWDC keynote alongside the latest versions of iOS and macOS.
