In addition to the major changes introduced with iOS 14.5, such as the ability to unlock your iPhone with your Apple Watch, there are two minor but notable changes in iPadOS 14.5. For the first time, iPad now supports emoji search and a new landscape mode splash screen.
Emoji search came to the iPhone with iOS 14 last fall, but it was strangely absent from the iPadOS until this week’s release of iPadOS 14.4. With this release, iPad users can now search for specific emoji they want to use.
To use this feature, simply open the emoji picker from the iPadOS keyboard and you’ll see a brand new search box. It works both with the software keyboard or if you have a standalone keyboard, such as the Magic Keyboard, connected to your iPad.
Another small but noticeable change in iPadOS 14.5 is a landscape mode splash screen, first spotted by 9to5Mac reader steven. Now when your iPad starts up, the Apple logo will display correctly in landscape orientation if it is connected to a Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard. If it is not connected to a Magic Keyboard or a Smart Keyboard, the Apple logo is always displayed in portrait orientation.
These are small features compared to other changes in iOS 14.5, but they’re still worth noting for iPad and iPad Pro users. Emoji search was a glaring omission when iPadOS 14 released last fall.
