IPhone 12 and 12 Pro users complain about no texting and message notifications

Since the release of the new iPhone 12 models, many new iPhone owners have experienced issues with the Messages app. There are complaints of users not seeing friends’ SMS messages, missing text messages in group chats, and not receiving notifications when text messages are inbound.

It’s unclear whether this is an issue specifically related to the ‌iPhone 12‌ models or whether it is a broader issue with iOS 14.1 and iOS 14.2, but the majority of complaints seem to come from owners of the iPhone. ‘‌IPhone 12‌.

Those who come across missed SMS just don’t see some text messages sent from Android devices because MacRumors The FraXis reader describes:

But I just upgraded to an ‌iPhone 12‌ (from an iPhone 11 Max Pro) and am in a group message with my kids. One of my children is an Android user. Last night, he came to see me and asked me why I had not replied to his two texts that he had sent to the group. I checked my ‌iPhone‌ and did not receive any text messages from it in the group chat. He then showed me his phone and of course he sent them to the group.

Most people who are missing SMS messages don’t see them in group chats, but there are reports that some stand-alone messages are not being delivered. Of MacRumors TheElmnt reader:

I have exactly the same problem. It seems that I am having problems in group threads only when there are Android users. I have been so confused in our posts the past few days. None of our conversations make sense. My friends and I just tested iMessage and there don’t seem to be any issues with just Apple users. I reported the bug to Apple. I just noticed this after upgrading to an iPhone 12 Pro from the iPhone XS. Running iOS 14.1 on Verizon. I deleted every text message on my phone and restarted, disabled and re-enabled iMessage. Hope this helps.

There are also separate complaints about receiving messages, but no notification appears. This is an issue that predates even the iPhone 12‌ and iOS 14, as we’ve had issues with it before as well. Of MacRumors bmac4 player:

I have the problem with only one person and it is not an SMS. Mine is iMessage. I texted my mom last night and she updated version 14.2 on her XR in the process. Shortly after, she stopped responding to my text. I sent her another, and she said she had never seen the text. Then I stopped receiving alerts. I had to open the messaging app and check if a message was present. Sure enough, the phone never alerted and there was no badge, but there was a message. ‌IOS 14‌ is a total mess.

Some Verizon users have been able to resolve their SMS messages by downloading the Verizon Message + app, but this is not a complete solution for everyone and it does not work for all non-Verizon users. One player also successfully reset the network settings (Settings> General> Reset> Reset network settings), but the others did not work. Turning off 5G doesn’t seem like a solution either.

This is likely an issue operators need to fix with updated firmware or Apple needs to fix in an upcoming software update. This appears to be an issue in iOS 14.1 and iOS 14.2, and it’s still too early to tell if iOS 14.3 is affected.
