Although he was a pioneer in the field of smartphone photography, it seemed for a time that Apple was slipping off the charts, at least the DxOMark charts. It hasn’t stopped trying to regain ground over the last few generations and its iPhone 12 Pro duo marks its biggest attempt to regain its place this year. When it comes to DxOMark’s reviews, it almost managed to do just that, but still clashes with the market leader Huawei.
Apple has always been modest with its smartphone cameras, preferring to extract as much hardware as possible and supplement it with software. This strategy worked for a while, but Huawei’s meteoric rise in this segment along with the march of Chinese companies like Xiaomi may have finally pushed Apple to act. On the basis of these scores, this work could finally bear fruit.
The iPhone 12 Pro, which has a standard 12MP sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide sensor and a 2x 12MP telephoto lens, was highly praised by DxOMark despite the similarity in specs to the iPhone 11 Pro Max from Last year. Good exposure, precise colors and above all autofocus are the strengths of this model. Where that fails, however, is unsurprisingly zoom tests with paltry 2x range.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max has almost the same sensor but extends the zoom range to 2.5x and gets the sensor offset OIS. DxOMark says the phone sets the autofocus record, but the LIDAR sensor doesn’t really bring out the bokeh simulation. The review also eliminates a few points for limited dynamic range and high noise levels.
Longtime iPhone users will probably be happy to hear that the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max definitely take the crown when it comes to Apple iPhones. Those with no loyalty to the operating system, however, might feel a bit more conflicted as Huawei’s P40 Pro and Mate 40 Pro still top the charts. Then again, Huawei’s ordeal could make these two a headache even for Android devotees. Apart from the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra, Apple has practically regained the crown this year.
