Pandemic and all, Apple shipped more phones in the last quarter of 2020 than any other manufacturer. Market research firm Gartner estimates that the company shipped around 80 million iPhones in the previous quarter. This performance, one of Apple’s best to date, helped overtake Samsung for the first time since Q4 2016. Samsung still ended the year with the most phone sales of any manufacturer, but saw an annual decline of 14.6% after a quarter in which shipments fell 11.8% year-on-year. Compare that to Apple, which saw its shipments increase 14.9% in Q4 2020 and sales increase 3.3% per year.
Gartner suggests that the launch of the iPhone 12 has helped Apple considerably, but all of the costly failures that Samsung threw in 2020 were probably just as critical to its success. the Note 20, both it’s safe to say they were overpriced when they first released. With the more affordable Galaxy S21 on offer to consumers, Samsung is in a much better position for 2021.
Despite all of Samsung’s woes in Q4 2020 and the rest of the year, it hasn’t suffered as badly as Huawei. The sanctions put in place by the Trump administration have taken a toll on the company. It saw shipments drop 41.1% in the quarter and sales 24.1% for the year.
To come back to Apple for a moment, it’s not just the iPhone that works for the company. Thanks to the pandemic and associated stay-at-home controls, the Mac is also on a roll. According to a recent report from Canalys, Apple’s shipping volume grew 45% in 2020 and 16.6% year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2020.
