The iPhone 13 is expected to be unveiled during its typical launch window in September 2021, and there are plenty of reasons to be excited about due to the early rumors and leaks. Yes, the iPhone 12 is the best phone you can buy right now, but once you hear about what’s to come, you could very well decide not to.
For example, while the iPhone 12 has a new look with its cropped edges and flat sides, the notch is still the same size. And Apple is expected to finally embrace 120Hz displays for the new iPhone 13, catching up with the best Android phones. We can also see the return of a feature that will make it easier to unlock your phone while wearing a mask.
Of course, we have several months left before the iPhone 13 is unveiled. But these are the seven biggest improvements and changes we’ve heard about so far.
A smaller iPhone 13 notch (finally)
The iPhone notch has been an eye sore since the iPhone X launched, but the area that houses the TrueDepth camera and allows Face ID packs in a lot of tech. According to a leak by Ice Universe on Twitter, the iPhone 13 will continue the notch design, but it will be shorter.
A separate report from Digitimes suggests that Apple will be able to reduce the size of the notch by reducing the size of the sensor that powers Face ID. In addition, the VSCEL chip on the front camera will be streamlined, which should reduce the volume. So while the notch won’t go away from the iPhone 13, it should be less noticeable.
The iPhone 13 will be the first iPhone to feature displays with 120Hz refresh rates, which should allow smoother scrolling and better video playback and better gaming with supported content. That’s according to Apple analyst Jon Prosser and display analyst Ross Young.
Using LTPO technology, displays should be able to scale from 120Hz to 1Hz depending on on-screen content, which should help save battery life. However, according to The Elec, only two models are expected to get 120Hz LTPO displays, which likely means the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Major iPhone 13 Camera Upgrades
While it looks like a more powerful periscope zoom won’t be available until the iPhone 14 in 2022, a number of other iPhone 13 camera upgrades have been leaked that look promising. For starters, the iPhone 13 will feature an upgraded ultra-wide lens with six elements and an f / 1.8 aperture. This would be an improvement over the iPhone 12’s f / 2.4 5-element lens, and the result should be better results in low light.
Additionally, analyst Ross Young predicts that the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will benefit from larger sensors, which will again let in more light. And the advanced sensor displacement stabilization found in the iPhone 12 Pro Max, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo will make its way to the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Huge Wi-Fi Upgrade: Wi-Fi 6E
If you haven’t heard of Wi-Fi 6E, you will. This new standard is designed to deliver even faster wireless speeds. An analyst report from Barclays indicates that the iPhone 13 range supports Wi-Fi 6E, which can connect on the 6 GHz band. This should cause less interference with other devices in your home.
Along with faster speeds, Wi-Fi 6E also allows for lower latency which should lead to better performance as well. Additionally, 6E Wi-Fi devices can use 160 MHz for high bandwidth activities like augmented reality. Broadcom, which manufactures mobile 6E Wi-Fi chips, called the 6 GHz band “the most disruptive benefit to Wi-Fi users in the past 20 years.”
The return of Touch ID for iPhone 13
The iPhone 13 could be the first real new iPhone design to support Touch ID in years. Analyst Mini-Chi Kuo claims Apple is working on an iPhone with both Face ID and an in-display fingerprint scanner for launch in 2021. However, this feature can be reserved for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
The analyst also says that Apple is developing an iPhone with Touch ID integrated into the power button for 2021. It would not be for a flagship device, so we are not sure if it is the iPhone 13 or regular iPhone 13 mini or a new iPhone SE 3 or iPhone SE Plus.
The new iPad Air features a Touch ID sensor in its power button, and it worked well in our testing. The relaunch of Touch ID for the iPhone 13 makes a lot of sense, as Face ID doesn’t work well with masks, and we may still be required to wear them in public until 2021.
Longer (and better 5G) battery life
If you’ve seen the results of our iPhone 12 battery tests, you know that Apple’s flagship products have not performed well. In fact, we’ve seen a really big delta between 4G and 5G when browsing the web. The good news is that Apple’s own documentation has revealed that Apple is expected to upgrade from Qualcomm’s 7-nanometer X55 5G modem to its newer, more efficient X60 5-nanometer modem.
The X60 can fit right into a phone’s chipset, which should help reduce clutter while reducing battery drain. In addition, the X60 can simultaneously combine mmWave and sub-6GHz networks for even faster speeds.
LiDAR for all four iPhone 13 models
Introduced on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, the LiDAR sensor offers better autofocus performance while still allowing tricks like portraits in very low light conditions. LiDAR also allows for better augmented reality performance because it can help create 3D maps of parts much faster.
According to Digitimes, all four iPhone 13 models should receive LiDAR (or time-of-flight) this time around. Thus, the functionality will no longer be reserved for the most premium iPhones. The report says the new ToF sensors will enable “instant immersive AR experiences. We’ve seen some pretty cool iPhone AR apps so far, but nothing that we would call a must-have.”
