Apple is about to release the iPhone 13. That might not be the name, and we might not know exactly what it looks like, but something big is coming.
That something will likely be a new handset, which could also be released alongside a new Apple Watch, new AirPods, and more.
We’ll finally find out the exact answer to what it is on September 14, when Apple hosts a virtual event to reveal the new phone. While it wasn’t specifically said that the event is for the iPhone – and the release was delayed until October of last year – it will almost certainly be the launch of the new handset.
Everything else is a bit more blurry. But there were plenty of rumors that helped give an indication of what might be happening at the event.
The name
The first question is what exactly it will be called. While we call it the iPhone 13 – and will continue to do so – there is no guarantee that this is what it will be called.
One problem is that the angel number 13 brings bad luck for many, although it is of course lucky for others. This could cause Apple to avoid it, if only to keep customers superstitious.
That’s a large number too, and for the most part Apple has tended to keep the numbers down once its products hit a high enough number, and simply refer to products by their year or some other name. This has led some to suggest that it might just ditch the numbering system entirely this year and simply call it the “new iPhone” – but it has also been suggested for all other iPhones in recent years.
Design changes can also be minimal, and Apple might just call the phone the iPhone 12S, as it has in the past.
There will likely be four versions of the phone, in the three different sizes available for the iPhone 12: a small Mini, a normal mid-size iPhone and a Pro, and a Pro Max. These names seem to have worked for the existing line-up and there’s no reason to think they’ll fit this time around.
But there is no way to know for sure. As with all marketing decisions – which also include pricing, for example – they can be changed relatively late and are less likely to leak outside of Apple.
Design
The design should stay pretty much the same as the current iPhone 13. Its flat sides, metal design, and rounded hump shouldn’t change much, if at all.
Some rumors suggest that the phone could get a bit bigger or heavier. Apple hasn’t shied away from doing so in recent years – it was once apparently looking for thinness above all else – so it wouldn’t be too surprising if it sacrificed volume for an improved battery, for example.
But the biggest design change will be the narrowing of the notch, according to various rumors. It will still be there – it is necessary to hide the camera and Face ID sensors – but Apple has reportedly found a way to make it take up less space as it protrudes from the screen.
Display
And this display should also be improved. Apple could finally bring the fast refresh technology that has been seen in its iPads – which allows scrolling and other behaviors to emerge
Previous rumors suggested he was working on such technology for previous iPhones, but was hampered by its cost for battery life. These may have finally been overcome.
Cameras
Various rumors have suggested that perhaps the biggest area of interest would be the cameras. This would be in line with previous years, which drastically improved the photos the iPhone can take, and which Apple has often made a big deal out of in its introduction and advertising.
Reports suggest this could include a focus on video, especially for the pros. It could also provide better performance at night and in low light – something that could have been referenced in the event invitation.
Interior
Like every year, the processor is likely to become faster and more efficient. Apple is bringing a new chip to every iPhone, and will likely do the same this year, adding an additional number to the name of the chip – the iPhone 12 is powered by the A14 Bionic, which also helped inspire the new M1 chip. for his computers and now iPads – and better performance.
One more thing ?
Apple is famous for its surprises, and it seems to have patched many of the leaks that once revealed its products in advance. So there could still be a surprise ahead – maybe something VR related?
