We’ve now heard reports of a bunch of iPhone 13 camera enhancements, and assuming they turn out to be true, I think Apple is going to sell me one.
I have often said that my iPhone is my least important Apple device. If I had to rank my iDevices according to their importance to me, my MacBook Pro would be at the top of the list, followed by the iPad, then the iPhone …
A lot of it reflects my lifestyle, of course. I worked from home even before the pandemic. I spend my work day sitting in front of my Mac and tend to only use my iPhone when I’m away. Most of this use is for listening to music and sending messages.
But one thing has changed dramatically in recent years: my iPhone has become my primary camera for everyday “memory capture” shots. This means that the photographic capabilities of the phone are perhaps the most important aspect of the device.
For general photography, the quality of the iPhone has noticeably improved with each generation, and by the iPhone X it was already competing with mirrorless cameras when it comes to nighttime shots – the test the most difficult of a small format camera.
The iPhone 11 Pro closed the gap even more, and while the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s overall low-light performance was only a marginal improvement, night mode portraits were a real game-changer – and ProRAW supports the click.
IPhone 13 Camera Improvements Supposed
We were already expecting some interesting improvements to the iPhone 13’s cameras.
First, Sensor Shift Image Stabilization is coming to the iPhone 13 Pro (it’s currently a 12 Pro Max exclusive), which delivers faster response than lens-based stabilization. . Both Pro models are also set to achieve an enhanced ultra-wide camera with autofocus, a wider aperture, and an additional lens element for better low-light performance and reduced distortion. Finally, we are waiting for some sort of astrophotography features for enhanced photos of the night sky.
But a report yesterday suggested that we can expect significant improvements on the video front as well.
Bloomberg specifically mentions adding a Portrait mode when shooting video, extending Apple’s synthetic background blur effect beyond static photos. […]
The report also states that the iPhone 13 Pro models will also be able to record in ProRes video format for the first time, providing higher quality output for creative professionals. The Apple ProRes format was developed by Apple over ten years ago and now supports resolutions up to 8K. Final Cut Pro is coded to efficiently manage and edit ProRes content, and is widely used in the professional video industry to provide final rendering projects.
I start slowly but surely in the video. Granted, it wouldn’t make much sense to have spent a scary enough sum on a filming kit to end up shooting on an iPhone, but there is one case where improved video capabilities would make a big difference: travel.
When it’s just me, photography or videography is a big part of what I love about the travel experience. I find it enhances my appreciation for the things I see, and I really enjoy looking back at photos or videos from past trips. So, on solo trips, I will gladly take a camera kit with me.
But when I’m with my girlfriend, it’s a different story. She has no interest in hanging around while I prepare for the shots, so the point-and-shoot nature of an iPhone is ideal.
Using an iPhone for video currently involves significant tradeoffs. Most notably, there is no control over depth of field when shooting on iPhone. But bringing Portrait mode to video – especially if it’s flexible enough to allow DOF control for things as well as people, the same way it is for still photos – would be a whole new world. .
I’ve used my iPhone 11 Pro as a video camera on vacation before, accepting that it would reduce the result to the level of a movie at home, and it was good, especially since I was only shooting a few seconds of footage here and there. But with depth-of-field control then it might be possible to create something much closer to what you get from a dedicated video camera.
If this report is true, I will be sold.
