IPhone 13 production rises as Apple adds Luxshare-9to5Mac

Apple has given Chinese electronics maker Luxshare Precision Industry a big promotion, bringing in the company for the production of the iPhone 13 alongside Foxconn and Pegatron. A plan for this was first suggested over a year ago and is apparently now confirmed.

The company currently manufactures several components for iPhone, but this move by Apple is highly unusual, leaving a new assembler to manufacture the latest flagship models …

To date, Luxshare has made AirPods, as well as haptic engine modules, camera modules, and metal frames for iPhone. However, he has no experience with the final assembly process of the iPhone.

Apple occasionally brings in new assemblers, as it did with Wistron in India, but the Cupertino company normally facilitates them with contracts for older models first. Nikkei Asia says it’s not this time.

Apple is seeking more suppliers in China for key roles in the production of the latest iPhone, a sign that the country’s technological competitiveness continues to increase despite Washington’s attempts to curb Beijing’s technological ambitions.

Chinese electronics maker Luxshare Precision Industry will build up to 3% of the next iPhone 13 series, winning orders from Taiwanese rivals Foxconn and Pegatron, Nikkei Asia has learned. Apple is expected to produce between 90 and 95 million new iPhones through January.

Luxshare will start building the iPhone 13 Pro – as the premium model should be called – this month, sources say, a major breakthrough for a company that has never produced an iPhone on its own. Newcomers to Apple’s supply chain normally start by making older iPhone models.

The 3% share means Apple isn’t too reliant on Luxshare for this year’s iPhone 13 production, but that percentage is likely to rise if all goes well. Apple prefers to have multiple suppliers throughout its supply chain, both to reduce the risk of a single point of failure and to strengthen its negotiating position.

A senior Foxconn or Pegatron executive is cited as grateful.

“Although Luxshare only manufactures a small percentage of iPhones this year, we cannot let our guard down,” said a senior executive at a rival iPhone supplier. “If we do not strengthen our competitiveness, sooner or later they will be the main source.

Analysts are bullish on demand for the iPhone 13, Apple is also expected to revert to its traditional September launch schedule for this year’s line.
