IPhone 13 reportedly has LiDAR scanner in all models

With the release of the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, Apple added a new LiDAR scanner to the rear camera array for depth sensing functionality. Now a new report on the supply chain of Digitimes says Apple will extend the LiDAR sensor beyond the “ Pro ” models with this year’s iPhone 13.

IPhone 13 LiDAR Rumor

the Digitimes The report largely focuses on the Time-of-Flight Sensor industry, particularly on the supply chain side and the adoption by manufacturers of Android. In the report, however, there is a tidbit that the LiDAR scanner currently exclusive to the iPhone 12 Pro will arrive in “all 2021 iPhone models” this year with the iPhone 13.

Apple has adopted the LiDAR dToF scanner in the iPad Pro and iPhone 12 Pro series, and is expected to apply the scanner technology to all of its 2021 iPhone models, which will remain available with Face ID sensors, the sources said.

Further, the report explains that Apple has signed an agreement with Sony ensuring that LiDAR scanners will be used in the iPhone at least until 2023:

Sony, in the Apple device supply chain, reportedly signed a three-year contract with Apple to offer a next-generation near infrared (NIR) CIS with a single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) array for the dToF LiDAR scanner , indicating that Apple will adopt the scanner in iPhones and other devices by at least 2023, the sources say.

We still don’t know much about what to expect from this year’s iPhone release, whether it’s the iPhone 12S, iPhone 13, or something entirely different. Earlier today, a separate supply chain reported that the iPhone 13 may bring mmWave 5G support to other countries.
