There have been a lot of rumors about the iPhone Flip, Apple’s foldable phone, but so far it’s unclear what kind of design the phone will use. A fold-out design like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2? Or a flip phone style flip like the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 3?
Apple has reportedly considered both options, but according to a new report from Jon Prosser, it looks like Cupertino is going with the latter.
According to the latest episode of Front Page Tech, Prosser’s video show, sources claim that Apple put the two iPhone Flip prototypes to the test and decided to focus its attention on the clamshell design. That’s right, the way things are, the first foldable iPhone could be the very first Apple-branded flip phone.
Prosser notes that Apple is not far away with this project, dismissing rumors and reports that we could see the iPhone Flip as early as next year. Prosser also notes that Apple plans to release the phone in a host of “fun” colors, and speculates that this could mean that it is configured as a general-purpose device for the general public.
In other words, the iPhone Flip might not be as expensive as some other foldable phones. Right now, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G sells for $ 1,199, which is $ 250 off the original price. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is currently priced at $ 999, which is $ 1,000 off since we reviewed the phone.
It’s unclear why Apple would have chosen the clamshell design for the foldable iPhone. Obviously, a clamshell phone design takes up less space than a foldable tablet, while still maintaining a full-sized iPhone screen. A larger tablet-like iPhone would inevitably be compared to the iPad, which Apple might want to avoid.
Of course, things can change. While development for the iPhone Flip is still in its early stages, Prosser says there is still plenty of scope for Apple to change course and move in a different direction.
Whether this actually happens is another matter, and we won’t know for sure until we start hearing more leaks or Apple makes some sort of official announcement. I wouldn’t rely on the latter for a while.
We’ll bring more to you on the iPhone Flip as we understand it. In the meantime, however, Samsung is preparing a Galaxy Z Flip 3 for this year.
