LG Display has stopped making iPhone LCDs and has given up on any hope of doing so in the future, according to a supply chain report. Separately, the company has said it may stop making its own smartphones.
LG has a long but somewhat troubled history in making iPhone displays …
Context
LG once competed with Samsung as a key supplier of iPhone displays, and Apple has taken advantage of two companies capable of meeting technical and volume requirements. Two vendors provided redundancy in Apple’s supply chain, while also giving the company bargaining power when it came to placing orders between the two companies.
Things changed when Apple began the transition to OLED with the iPhone X. LG was slow to recognize the industry trend from LCD to OLED and was ill-prepared for Apple’s move. This left Samsung as the sole supplier of Apple’s flagship phones for some time.
LG was finally able to catch up and win Apple OLED orders, but experienced technical issues even after doing so – and Samsung still maintains a technical lead.
LG has stopped making iPhone LCD screens
LG also continued to manufacture LCD screens for older Apple iPhones, but a report in TheElec says he stopped doing it in the third quarter of last year and has now given up on plans to try again.
LG Display has stopped production of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels for iPhone, TheElec has learned […] LG Display halted production of iPhone LCDs on its AP3 line at Gumi in the third quarter. The line also stopped making panels for other phones in the fourth quarter.
For LG Display, the iPhone LCD line was unprofitable. Apple has also used organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels instead for its iPhone 12 series. Sales of iPhones with OLEDs are also expected to exceed those with LCD panels this year.
Apple’s LCD model, iPhone SE, launched last year, will instead use LCD panels from JDI and Sharp. LG Display had previously attempted to supply an LCD display for the 2019 model iPhone SE, but failed.
The factory that made the LCD screens is said to be being redeveloped to manufacture display panels for cars. LG is currently the market leader in automotive displays that are nine inches or larger.
However, Apple will not be short of LCD panel suppliers, with Japan Display and Sharp taking over.
