SODUS TOWNSHIP, Michigan – A fire that swept a motel in southwest Michigan on Saturday morning killed five children and their mother, authorities said.
The Cosmo Extended Stay Motel in Sodus Township was completely engulfed by firefighters. After receiving a call at 9:45, the Berrien County Sheriff said:
Kiarre Samuel, 26, and five children between the ages of 2 and 10 have probably succumbed to smoke inhalation, said Deputy Minister Robert Boyce. Samuel's husband and another child survived. All eight were in the same room
"It's tragic, it rips the heart," says Boyce. "Whenever you have kids, it's worse, when there are several kids, it's even worse."
The motel is located near Interstate 94 in the south West of Michigan, about 160 kilometers from Chicago. The authorities said that 27 rooms were occupied and that 90% of the property had been damaged by smoke, fire or water.
Boyce described the two-story motel as a place where low-income people could get back on their feet. Eight people were treated for smoke inhalation and were released from a hospital.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Sarah Sanders, a resident of a motel, said that she had run away after a friend had shouted her to go out.
