Three people were found dead in a retirement home in South Texas after police responded to calls from an active shooter on the spot. Further investigation found two more people dead in a nearby location, police said.
Police reported to Retama Manor Nursing Center in Robstown, Texas, a small town about two hours south of San Antonio, around 7 pm. according to the Robstown Police Department. Upon their arrival, three people were found dead, including the gunman, according to Robstown's chief administrator and city secretary Herman Rodriguez. Two men and one woman were reported dead on their arrival, police said.
Robstown police described the threat as "neutralized" in a statement.
Authorities then found two other people, the two men, dead at the suspect's home in Robstown, according to the San Antonio ABC KIII affiliate.
Rodriguez told KIII that he could not give more information about how the shooting took place. A new conference is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, officials said.
Authorities have stated that the investigation into the murders is ongoing and that few details would be shared with respect to the family involved. Rodriguez said that he was "stunned" by the situation.
"All we would say at this point at such an early stage of this tragedy would be speculation and we absolutely do not want to speculate," Rodriguez told KIII. "It's a profound incident that does not really happen here in Robstown, we have to keep the family empathy, it's a small town here in Robstown."
Retama Manor Nursing Center has been described by the police as a medium-sized for-profit nursing home with 94 beds. The company operates a number of nursing homes in South Texas.
"Current information will remain scarce as we are investigating an investigation into a murder and not compromising anything that could hinder this investigation," Robstown police chief Erasmo Flores said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the families [sic] of the victim and the residents, visitors and employees of Manoir Retama who have experienced this tragedy."
Texas Rangers will help in the murder investigation.
