A dog attack leaves a 6-year-old girl with life-threatening injuries in Jacksonville, Florida

A 6-year-old girl was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after being badaulted by a dog in Jacksonville, Florida, authorities said Sunday. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the incident occurred around 10 am Sunday in a home in Arlington neighborhood.

Police said the girl did not react when they arrived at the scene. She was transported to a nearby hospital by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Service

. The dog, which appeared to be a pit bull mix, was removed from the house on Sunday, police said in a Facebook post. The family was watching the dog while his owner was on vacation. Police said the family was home at the time of the attack.

Timothy Hightower told WJAX, a subsidiary of CBS in Jacksonville, that he was outside when his neighbor ran outside to ask for help.

A note posted at the front door of the house asked residents to contact the Jacksonville Animal Protection and Protection Service within 24 hours, reports WJAX. He informed residents that an animal had been impounded and quarantined.

Homicide investigators at the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office are conducting the investigation.
