The lizard was found trapped in the web of the fake spider widow, and the spider was eating it. This was the first recorded case of native lizard plagued by extraterrestrial spider in Ireland, and the research was published yesterday in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy
The False Widow Spider was found for the first time in Ireland 20 years ago, in Bray, Co Wicklow. The spider is described as being cold, tolerant, with a high reproductive rate and exceptional longevity.
