David O 'Malley bathes in the golden glow of Poland's success

"It's a feeling," said David O Malley, thinking of the gold medal won by Ireland's lightweight pair at the U23 World Championships years.

He had partnered with Shane Mulvaney for the second year in a row, and this time the UCD men had only one thing in mind. "After the bronze last year, we wanted gold … We would have been happy with nothing but gold."

Just two more races late Saturday in Poznan Poland, the light quadruple took money, coming from the back of the pack.

It was a gutsy performance by Miles Taylor, Niall Beggan, Ryan Ballantine and cox Andrew Goff. "There is a good belief in the team – you could see it in the quad performance," said O Malley.

Come Sunday, there were two other finals for Ireland. Ronan Byrne took his chances in the skiffs, but when he reached the top table, he was unable to make his way through the medals. The lightweight double of Fintan and Jake McCarthy also looked – surprisingly for a Skibbereen crew – short of finishing speed. Both crews took fifth place.

Great Britain won first prize in the junior tournament of the Youth Cup in Cork. Ireland took third place in the women's and men's events.

Ronan Foley won the Junior Men's K1 500-meters B Final at the Junior and Under-23 World Canoe-Kayak Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The paddler of Kilcullen, junior European marathon champion in canoe, also won the K1 1000m final B at the event. This victory places him in 10th place overall.
