MIAMI – Oscar became the eighth hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season Sunday, but he was far away in the Atlantic and posed no threat of landing. At 10 am, the National Hurricane Center announced that Oscar was centered 660 miles southeast of Bermuda and 645 miles north-east of the Leeward Islands and was moving toward the north. West at 16 mph.
It blew sustained maximum winds of 75 mph which had extended outside only 15 miles.
According to forecasters at the Miami-based hurricane center, Oscar "should accelerate rapidly to the northeast by the middle of the week. … A boost is expected until Tuesday, followed by
progressive weakening thereafter ".
There was no coastal surveillance or warnings in effect.
Oscar strengthened in a tropical storm late Saturday on the open waters.
The hurricane season of the Atlantic ends on November 30 and usually peaks in mid-September.
