It was at least the fourth time in three days that children were injured or worse at a bus stop. Other incidents occurred in Mississippi, Indiana and another Florida city.
In the Tampa crash, witnesses said that a vehicle traveling at high speed in a residential area had hit several pedestrians on the side of the street, said Tampa Police spokesman Eddy Durkin.
The images of the scene show scattered backpacks on the shoulder. The car in question seemed to be a silver sedan.
Two adults and three minors were taken to local hospitals with serious injuries, Durkin said. A minor is in critical condition.
The driver remained on the scene, said police chief Brian Dugan at the police station. The kids at the bus stop were between 6 and 12 years old, said Dugan.
A fire truck responding to the scene of the accident crashed en route, injuring two first responders who were taken to the hospital, said a Tampa Fire Rescue representative at the WFLA.
It is not clear if the adults mentioned by Durkin are the first responders.
The accident comes two days after a driver killed a 9-year-old girl and her two brothers who were crossing the street to catch a school bus in a rural area of Indiana.
A woman was arrested and charged with three counts of reckless homicide related to death. She was released on bail of $ 15,000.
The driver received two traffic citations, reported the station. The boy is at home and is doing well, his family told WCTV.
Also on Wednesday, a 22-year-old man from Marietta, Mississippi, was charged with aggravated badault after he fatally hit a child on a highway north of Tupelo, said Mississippi Patrol Captain Johnny Poulos.
The man, who was driving a van, hit a 9-year-old boy as the boy crossed the road to get on a school bus, police said. His bond was set at $ 10,000.
