A Dallas police officer was killed after being hit by an intoxicated driver during an escort Saturday morning, authorities said.

Sr. Cpl. Earl Jamie Givens, a 32-year veteran of the force, was killed after an SUV hit him while he was blocking a ramp on Interstate 20 said Chief U. Renee Hall. The officer was doing a courtesy escort for his colleague Tyron Andrews, who died of cancer. Givens had been part of the motorcycle since 2012.

Givens was transported to the Baylor University Medical Center where he died, reported FOX 4.

The officer was stationary at that time there while the lights of his bike were on. hit "at a high rate of speed" by the car. All eastbound lanes on I-20 were closed after the crash.

The SUV collided with a concrete divider and the driver of the vehicle, a 25-year-old man, was arrested because he was suspected of driving while intoxicated and a rest from sobriety was carried out. It has not been identified.
