If you live in Greenland, freezing cold temperatures are probably part of your daily life. But it's not every day that an 11-ton iceberg parks just off your shores and you dare to do something about it. That's what happens in the small village of Innaarsuit, which starts last week

On Thursday, a large iceberg drifted inland a few hundred feet from the shore, causing evacuations from the area. Residents are concerned that the iceberg will be unstable and may tip over or break at any time. Such an event would probably trigger floods that could overwhelm the entire village. In the video above, a small calving event – part of the iceberg breaks the largest together – sets off considerable waves, though these waves do not threaten the shoreline.

During the past week, the iceberg has drifted slightly from the village itself, resulting in a partial lift of the evacuation. But that does not mean that the village is out of danger: the iceberg is now much closer to the village power station. Officials in the region remain alert.

The iceberg and its proximity to Innaarsuit were also captured by the Sentinel-2A satellite of the European Space Agency. The picture below clearly shows the size of the iceberg, which completely eclipses the village itself in the photo.
