A pair of forest fires cover the area of Santa Cruz in smoke
According to Cal Fire, a smoke fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains continued to burn on Sunday, slowly spreading through very dry sawn timber and reaching 25 acres, while a nearby wildfire nearby was quickly mastered earlier in the day.
The Rincon fire, which caught fire on Saturday night near the Paradise Park neighborhood northeast of the Santa Cruz UC campus, was subdued Sunday afternoon, said Scott McLean, spokesman Cal Fire's speech, despite previous information that the fire was fully under control.
The fire was burning in heavy wood between Highway 9 and the San Lorenzo River, he said. The strong winds have diminished but the weather has remained dry with a humidity of about 15%, he said.
The smoke and flames closed Highway 9 from its intersection with Highway 1 until Glengarry Road about 4 miles north of Santa Cruz, according to Caltrans.
Nader Oweis, chief of the UCSC police, said that the Paradise Park neighborhood had been evacuated as a precaution. He stated that the fire posed no danger to the university campus or its students, but that it was creating smoky conditions on campus. He added that firefighters may be using campus firewalls to access the hilly area.
A separate wildfire erupted on Sunday at Scotts Valley but was soon limited to 5 acres, Cal Fire officials said. Firefighters stayed on the scene to make sure the fire was not reigniting.
A red flag alert regarding extreme fire conditions, particularly in the North Bay and East Bay Hills, was raised early Sunday morning, while the high winds stopped. High winds, combined with low relative humidity and dry vegetation, can cause rapid spread of small fires in major fires.
