NEW ORLEANS – Eight animals are now dead after a jaguar escaped from its habitat at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans. A CBS affiliate, WWL-TV, reports that an alpaca and a fox died Sunday, the day after the male jaguar killed four alpacas, an emu and a fox on Saturday morning. The jaguar was captured and returned to his house at night after being asleep by a veterinary team
No injuries and the zoo was reopened Sunday.
The zoo acquired alpacas in March from farms in Alabama and Mississippi. The alpaca died during the night of Sunday was the last live alpaca of the zoo.
A wounded fox continues to be watched.
It is unclear how the animal escaped. Zoo officials say the inspections revealed that the roof was "compromised," but initial findings concluded that the guardian's mistake was not a factor.

In a Facebook post in February, the zoo called the Jaguar Valerio a "great adorable goofball" and encouraged visitors to see it in its "Jaguar Jungle" exhibit.
